Frequently Asked Questions

Paint Enhancement ? Paint Correction ? Polishing ? Is this Necessary ?

These are 3 different ways to say the same thing really. Polishing is defined "to improve, refine, or add the finishing touches to a surface by rubbing".

Automobile bodies are made typically of Metals, Plastics or Fiberglass covered with a layer of base paint, then a Primer, covered by a Colored automobile paint and finally a Clear Coat.

The total thickness of all these layers is usually 3-5 millimeters, incredibly thin ! With Clear Coat accounting for approximately 40% of that thickness.

When dealing with scratches or swirls in the paint it's important to understand the causes and symptoms in order to address a solution. Imagine a scratch on a Black car, the scratch is usually white, right? Wrong. The "white" is actually an optical illusion caused by a literal scratch in the clear coat that allows for Light to be trapped inside the defect and reflect at odd angles causing a white appearance which is why many scratches are invisible in low light environments. See the image below and imagine light bouncing off a smooth surface vs refracting within the gouges below.

So whats a solution to smoothing out a surface like the one pictured above ?  Well there's 2 obvious solutions that come to mind. Fill in the low spots, or cut down the high spots. While there are a lot of "clear coat" solutions on the internet, many are snake oil products and the only true reparation to an entirely depleted clear coat is to have the entire panel repainted, as Clear Coat has to be applied entirely at one time as one layer. Touch-Up paint may also come to mind as a way to fill in the low spots, while it is definitely a viable solution especially in terms of rust prevention, it cannot achieve the same results as this final option.

Polishing is in essence, Wet Sanding with an extremely fine grit. Just as sandpaper smoothens wood by taking down high spots uniformly, Polishing compounds and rotary buffers smoothen clear coat to bring back that wonderful, glossy showroom shine!

What Are the Risks associated with Paint Polishing?

Since you are electing to have your clear coat buffed down to create a uniform layer as deep as the deepest scratch, you sacrifice the protection that a full clear coat offers in exchange for a cosmetic restoration. To minimize the risk after paint polishing we highly recommend sealing in those results with a Wax, Sealant or Ceramic Coating.

Are all Scratches able to be Buffed out ? If not, how can I tell ?

Unfortunately no. Once the Scratch has gone past the clear coat into the basecoat, primer or bare metal there is no way to make the affected area smooth again without filling in the low spots with paint. That is a service that we do not currently offer as we cannot deliver results on par with our reputation. We aren't Painters, We are Detailers and we take pride in doing the best.

Tell me More about Ceramic Coatings?

I'd love to. Ceramic coatings provide an extra layer of Paint Protection by adding a veil of Silica (almost glass) to the top of the vehicle. The Highly Durable, Glossy, and incredibly smooth Hydrophobic finish transforms the appearance of a vehicle while adding an almost unbeatable layer or protection from the world. Now it's important to remember that even a bulletproof vest can't stop every bullet, a Ceramic Coating isn't indestructible. Intentional scratching, negligence and repeated abuse will diminish the protective abilities of a ceramic coating.

A ceramic coating once applied makes it impossible to affect the paint without first removing this incredibly durable layer of silica glass. Should anyone be interested in having a ceramic coating applied to their vehicle should first consider having a paint enhancement to lock in the best looking paint with the highest gloss and protection on the market.
